Quatrefoil Series
The quatrefoil is a common ecclesiastical architectural framing device which features heavily in church tracery. Focusing on this key structural element, this series deals with the erosion of the church’s power in society and visually articulates this through the lens of a deconstructed stained glass window.
Using laser-cut acrylic offset from the backing board within the frame, the intent is to capture some of the depth and movement one experiences when viewing a stained glass window. The black linear (lead lines) and associated coloured forms reference architectural elements in churches as well as anatomical forms within doom paintings. These interlock and expand within the curved forms of the quatrefoil, creating a sense of perspective, dynamism and drama. The overlapping transparent colours are evocative of the intense, vibrant tones and materiality of stained glass.
