Stoney Road Press

Set of four intaglio prints produced with the fine art print studio Stoney Road Press. These artworks take their inspiration from the two St. Patrick’s Cathedrals of Dublin and New York , highlighting the strong link between the two cities. Using a common ecclesiastical architectural framing device of the quatrefoil, the intent is to capture some of the depth and movement one experiences when viewing a stained glass window. The underlying structure of the linear black (lead lines) reference architectural elements in both churches. The lead lines and associated coloured forms depict deconstructed stained glass window, they interlock and expand within the curved forms of the quatrefoil to create a sense of perspective, dynamism and drama. I was keen a sense of balance was achieved within each piece to hold its own or that the four works could equally work as a pair, three or four hung in a multitude of configurations. The overlapping transparent colours are evocative of the intense, vibrant tones and materiality of stained glass.

These works look to the future of contemporary stained glass, fusing today’s technology with age old techniques.  Similarly, the prints use modern printing methods but also employ traditional gilding in the application of the gold leaf sheets.
